Why Receiving Can Feel So Uncomfortable
Receiving sounds simple until we are actually asked to do it.
Receiving support means admitting that we have needs. Receiving help means allowing someone else to take the lead. Receiving care asks us to lower our walls enough for another person to reach us.
For those of us who have spent our lives being the strong, capable, responsible ones, receiving can feel incredibly vulnerable.
Control felt like safety to me for much of my life. When I was in charge, I knew what was going to happen. I didn’t have to depend on someone else. I didn’t have to wait and wonder whether support would come.
I could make things happen.
But there is a cost to always forcing, pushing, and taking charge. We can become so accustomed to holding everything that we no longer know how to let ourselves be held.
Receiving begins with softening.
For me, this is part of moving more deeply into my divine feminine energy. It is allowing myself to rest while I wait for support instead of immediately stepping in and forcing an outcome. It is trusting my intuition, honoring my natural rhythms, and remembering that I do not always have to make everything happen through effort.
Receiving also shows up in seemingly small moments.
What do you do when someone gives you a compliment?
For years, if someone said, “I really like your shirt,” I might respond, “Oh, this is old. I’ve worn it a hundred times.”
If someone complimented my hair, I might say, “Oh, it’s so dirty. I haven’t washed it for days.”
I didn’t realize I was refusing the gift.
Instead of allowing someone’s kind words to reach me, I quickly explained why I didn’t deserve them. I deflected the compliment before I ever let myself feel it.
Perhaps you do this too.
Someone tells you that you did a wonderful job, and you point out what went wrong. Someone offers to help, and you insist you can handle it. Someone expresses appreciation, and you change the subject.
Receiving requires us to remain present long enough to let the good reach us.
So, I have a challenge for you this week. When someone gives you a compliment, let your only response be:
“Thank you.”
No explanation. No minimizing. No returning the compliment because you feel uncomfortable. Simply take a breath, look the person in the eye, and say, “Thank you.”
Notice what happens inside you.
Receiving is a practice. Each time we allow a compliment, a kindness, a helping hand, or a moment of rest to reach us, we loosen another brick in the walls we once built for protection.
Maybe you don’t have to hold everything alone anymore.
Maybe it is safe to let something good come in.
Thought for the Week
For one week, receive every compliment with a simple “thank you.” Notice when you feel the urge to minimize, explain, or deflect, and ask yourself what receiving is bringing up in you.

The Sovereign Empath
From Absorbing to Observing: How to Feel Deeply Without Losing Yourself.
Sunday, Nov 15 12:30-2:30pm
Your sensitivity is a gift. But when you’re deeply attuned to the emotions and energy of others, it can be easy to absorb what isn’t yours, feel responsible for how others are feeling, or abandon your own needs in an effort to help, fix, or keep the peace.
This class isn’t about building walls or keeping people away. We are hardwired for love and connection. It’s about learning how to stay connected to others without disconnecting from or abandoning yourself.
Together, we’ll explore the difference between absorbing and observing, how to recognize what is yours and what isn’t, and how healthy energetic and emotional boundaries can actually create deeper, more authentic relationships.

This retreat is for the woman who knows she needs a reset.
You may not know exactly what needs to change.
You simply feel the quiet nudge telling you it’s time to slow down, listen within, and make yourself a priority.
Together, we’ll explore the patterns you’re ready to release, reconnect with your intuition, and create space for what you want in this next chapter of your life.
Held on 51 peaceful acres, our weekend will include healing sessions, art journaling, nature walks, nourishing meals, meaningful connection, rest, laughter, and fun.
