Staying in Alignment

On the blog last week we talked about being in alignment and true to ourselves.

Here are a few things I find helpful to stay centered and out of reaction mode.

When something happens or someone says or does something we don’t like, we can either respond or react.

Responding comes from a place of being aware of our emotions and taking care of them.

Reacting comes from ignoring our emotions. When we ignore them we stuff them down where they wait to be triggered and come to the surface as a nasty comment or yelling. Often saying things we don’t mean. Does that ever happen to you? Tell me I’m not alone.

When I feel an emotion coming up, I remind myself to feel it.

I don’t have to express it or put it on anyone else. This is for sure a challenge in the moment when you’re in a heated discussion. I do know how much better it feels to stay centered and in my power, and that’s how I want to live.

I remind myself that my emotions are mine.

Another person or situation is only showing me where my emotions are hidden. The ‘trigger’ brings that emotion to the surface. With that awareness, I can choose my response. I can feel that emotion and ask myself what it’s teaching me, or I can react and blame it on the other person or situation.

I journal about my feelings that bring up emotions.

Try spending 15 minutes writing about what came up, how you handled it, and what you can do differently next time.

I surrender to the idea that everything in my life is going to be the way I want it to be.

This allows me to be more understanding. I allow others to have their moments and I don’t take their actions personally. When I am able to do this, I’m extending grace to others and when I come from that place, difficult situations dissolve much easier.

Maybe the biggest part of this is knowing I want to feel good.
Feeling good is our nature; it’s what we are meant to do. We are in alignment when we feel good. Pay attention to how you feel. If you’re not feeling good, ask yourself why.
