Selling Out

It’s interesting that ‘selling out’ came up for me today. I think we can sell ourselves out in a lot of different ways, big and small. We hardly notice the small ways we do it and eventually they become habits. Agreeing with someone so you get along and keep the peace is one way I have for sure sold myself out and there are lots of others. I can still hear my mom say, “Peace at any price!”. She lived by that motto. I don’t think she saw it as selling out. She was just avoiding conflict.

The problem I have found, though, is that when I got used to selling myself out in little ways, the big sellouts became much less complicated for me to justify to myself. I wanted so badly to fit in and be like everyone else, and selling out seemed to help me accomplish that.

I think another one of our biggest sellouts is looking for all of our answers and guidance outside of ourselves. We put our trust in things we see on TV or social media instead of checking within. We trade our guidance for someone else’s. We all want to belong and feel connected, so we follow other’s ideas and beliefs.

2020 has been a difficult year, to say the least. So many have sold out to fear and worry – it’s no wonder with all that’s going on. We’ve been told how we should think, feel, and act. It seems impossible at times to turn off all those thoughts.

What if we took a moment to look at some of the beliefs and practices that we’ve adopted as our own that don’t really resonate with us?

What are we doing, thinking, and feeling just so we can fit in? It’s okay not to be okay right now. It’s okay not to know all the answers. It’s okay to be tired, sad, happy, burned out, joyful, and anything else that we are. It’s definitely okay to reach out for support when we’re feeling alone.

Trusting our inner guidance allows us to live from a place of connection and love. Connection is and has always been available to us. All we have to do is be aware, ask, and allow it to show up in our lives. Being connected in our inner world brings us connection in our outer world.

When we change the world changes.
