How much power do you give to things that you can’t control?

In my previous post, we talked about how we give our power away to people in order to get the attention, praise, or love we desire. Let’s now explore where else our power goes. Sometimes it goes in a slow drip like when we say ‘yes’ to something small that we want to say no to. Other times it goes with the force of a raging river when we continue to get angry about the same thing over and over again.

The energy we have for creating the life we want is going out in all directions. It takes energy to get out of bed in the morning, then all day long, whatever we do, we are giving our energy away. The question I ask myself is, “Is what I’m doing moving me in the direction I want to go? Is this in alignment with who I am and what I desire in my life?”

I didn’t think that things like being angry about something was giving my power away. But I assure you, time we spend on anything that does not serve our vision for our life, uses power that we could be creating with instead. How much time do you spend being angry, distracted, frustrated, or in a cycle of self-sabotage? Not to mention all the other areas of our lives that we give our energy like our family, our job, relationships, homes, the list is endless. Are you starting to get the picture of why you feel so depleted of energy? Why you oftentimes feel stuck in not getting what you want?

Picture your body with cords carrying your energy to everything in your life. There are green cords for the things you want to give your energy to. These might be your family, your hobbies, your friends, and anything else that fulfills you and makes your heart happy. There is an energy exchange, we feel alive and energized. Then we have the red cords that are carrying our energy to things that cause us resentment. These could be things like getting frustrated and angry about how people drive every time you get in your car, getting frustrated about how people act, get the idea? These are the things that no amount of frustration can change. These are things out of our control and putting our attention on them leaves us depleted. Is this all making sense now?

How much power do you give to things that are not and will never be in your control? I have to admit that I used to give most of my power away to situations I had no control over. And besides that, I had no right to control. Learning to ‘stay in my lane’ and use my energy for what I want instead of what I don’t want has changed my life.
