We Need People Who Help Us Remember Who We Are
How do we keep returning to ourselves when life and the people in it continually pull at our energy?
How do we remember that someone else’s behavior is not a reflection of our worth?
How do we stay grounded in compassion, grace, and truth when an old wound has been activated?
For me, one of the most important answers has been surrounding myself with people I trust, people who can lovingly mirror back to me the qualities I sometimes forget I possess.
We all need people who can remind us of who we are when pain temporarily makes us forget.
Not people who simply tell us what we want to hear. Not people who encourage us to avoid responsibility or remain stuck in the same story. We need people who can witness our pain without judging us, trying to fix us, or making our experience about themselves.
We need people who can sit beside us in the discomfort while also holding a vision of our wholeness.
This is what mentorship and mentoring groups have given me.
For many years, I believed I had to work through everything on my own. I was strong, capable, responsible, and accustomed to being the one other people could depend on. But being capable of carrying something alone does not mean we were ever meant to.
There is something deeply healing about having a safe place where you can say:
“This hurt me.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
“I’m angry.”
“I feel rejected.”
“I’m afraid.”
“I’ve lost sight of who I am.”
When our pain is witnessed with love, it begins to loosen its hold on us.
We no longer have to hide it, defend it, minimize it, or carry it silently. We can bring it into a space where it is met with compassion rather than judgment.
This does not mean someone else heals us. No mentor, friend, or group can do our inner work for us. But the right people can create a safe space where we feel supported enough to do that work ourselves.
They can ask the questions we may be afraid to ask.
They can help us recognize patterns we cannot see from inside our own experience.
They can remind us of our strength without asking us to pretend we are not hurting.
They can reflect our light when all we can see is the wound.
And slowly, as we release more of the pain we have been carrying, we create room for something else.
We create room for peace.
We create room for self-trust.
We create room for compassion, joy, freedom, and the divine spark that has always lived within us.
We remember who we are.
The people we surround ourselves with matter because energy is contagious. When we spend time with people who embody the qualities we want to cultivate authenticity, love, courage, generosity, honesty, and grace, those qualities are strengthened within us.
They are not giving us something we do not already possess. They are helping us recognize and nurture what has been there all along.
That is one of the greatest gifts of safe, intentional community.
It reminds us that we are not alone.
It gives us somewhere to bring the parts of ourselves we have kept hidden.
It allows us to be witnessed without being rescued.
And it helps us practice receiving support instead of always being the one who gives it.
If you are struggling with the way someone is showing up in your life, ask yourself who you have around you.
Do you have someone who can listen without immediately giving advice?
Do you have someone who will lovingly tell you the truth?
Do you have people who recognize your wholeness even when you feel broken?
Do you have a place where you can set down what you have been carrying?
Healing happens within us, but it does not always happen alone.
Sometimes we need another person to hold up a different kind of mirror—not one that reflects our wounds, but one that reflects our courage, our goodness, our growth, and our light.
We need someone who can look beyond the pain and say:
“I still see you. I know who you are. Let me help you remember.”
