What is it that you really want in your life?

What is it that you really want in your life? How would having it make you feel?

Could it be that it’s not only our desire, but also the feelings of fulfillment, contentment, joy, excitement, peace, etc. those desires bring that we long for?

So many times in my life I’ve waited to feel happy or fulfilled until I accomplished or acquired something I wanted. I told myself I could be happy only then. I spent a lot of time worrying and wondering why things weren’t working out like I planned. Worrying brought about unhappiness and frustration, so that’s what I experienced more of – the law of attraction at work.

I remember in my 30’s wanting a bigger house. While driving to see a house that was for sale, I turned around in a driveway and fell in love with the cedar-sided house with a big front porch looking down on a small lake. I remember saying, “that’s my house”. I was so excited every time I thought about the house. I could see family and friends gathered there and the feeling of connection.

Sure enough, months later the house came up for sale and we bought it. I was so excited! For a time I felt content every time I drove down the tree-lined drive. As time went on though, the feelings of excitement turned into frustration to have to keep a bigger house and property up. The cleaning, maintenance, and yard work were overwhelming at times because that’s where I put my focus. I let the ‘feeling’ of my desire get lost and focused on the work I had to do. Then I would look for the next thing I wanted to accomplish or acquire… sound familiar? I now know that what I longed for was gathering people, feeling connected and peaceful.

We are here to create the life we desire. We can have anything or do anything we want. There are a lot of things I want to do and have. I have the awareness to look at the feelings those things bring me and find other ways to honor those feelings while I wait. I recognize I can experience those feelings with and without getting what I want. That leads to feeling good more of the time.

Our real power is knowing we have the capability to feel what we want to feel. That may not sound true when we’re going through a rough time. I’m not saying to ignore the other feelings. Give them some time and space, sit with them. Then choose how you want to feel. Yes, it takes practice, presence, and awareness, and it leads to freedom.
