How can you enrich someone’s life?
Pay attention to the opportunities that present themselves to enrich lives. When we do something for someone else, it enriches both our lives and the ripple effect is infinite.
I had a fantastic experience this week! First, it was our monthly hair day and that’s always a day I look forward to; of course, to get my hair done, but mostly spending it with an amazing friend, doing lunch and catching up. There are always lots of laughs along with plenty of serious conversations. We Inspire each other to stay real and find opportunities to grow and expand. We encourage each other and always know, no matter how crazy the idea sounds, the other one is sure to say ‘sure, why not’!
We went to one of our favorite local spots for lunch after doing each other’s hair, which has been a monthly tradition for nearly fifteen years. We were seated in an out-of-the-way table, which was a good thing, as we can get a little loud from time to time. The hostess seated us and told us our server would be with us shortly.
When he came to our table, our server looked a bit overwhelmed. I sensed he was struggling. Not just with his day, but in his life too. He was very attentive and did a great job. As the restaurant got busier, I noticed he became even more overwhelmed and less sure of himself.
As we finished with our meal, he brought us our check and said he would be back to take care of it for us. I told my friend that I wanted to leave him a good tip and wanted to look him in the eyes and tell him what an awesome job he did and how much I appreciated him. We were tempted to go on and leave a few times because it took him a while to get back to us, but I just kept thinking he needed to hear how I felt.
When he came back and I handed him the tip and told him what a great job he did, he got tears in his eyes and said, ‘You’re going to make me cry. You don’t know how much I needed to hear that, I appreciate you’. It was like a weight lifted off him, he smiled and looked lighter; and so were we.
I am pretty sure we got as much out of the encounter as he did.
In a world filled with rough days, look for opportunities to make others’ days better. It will make yours brighter too.
When we change the world changes.
