Perception: The Lens Through Which We See

A couple of weeks ago, I reached into my basket of cards—the ones I often pull from for guidance and inspiration—and drew one that simply said: Perception.

That word hasn’t left me since.

It challenged me to slow down and become more intentional about how I view the world. What lens am I seeing through? Is it fear or love? Lack or gratitude? Assumption or curiosity?

Perception shapes how we think, feel, act—and ultimately, how we experience life. And recently, I was reminded just how powerful perception truly is.

Last week, my grandson was in a serious automobile accident. Understandably, many people reacted with fear and alarm:

“Oh my gosh, it’s so horrible.”

“This could’ve been so much worse.”

And while yes, the accident was serious and the situation could have gone a very different way, what I felt most deeply was not horror—but gratitude.

I was thankful that his injuries weren’t life threating.

That no one else was injured.

That his injuries are treatable.

That we still have him with us.

That’s the lens I chose to look through. Gratitude.

And I felt the energetic shift instantly. Gratitude and fear cannot coexist in the same breath. One constricts, the other expands. One weighs you down, the other opens your heart.

This is the sacred power of perception.

We are always choosing—whether consciously or not—the filter through which we see. And those filters shape how we feel about what’s happening, what story we tell ourselves, and how we show up in the world.

Perception is also deeply tied to judgment. When we move into judgment—of others, of ourselves, or even of a situation—we often do so with a limited view. We forget that we rarely have the whole story. We stop the flow of love, because judgment closes the heart. It disconnects us from compassion, understanding, and curiosity.

So I invite you, as this card invited me:

Next time you find yourself reacting to something in a way that doesn’t feel good or aligned—pause.

Take another look.

Ask yourself:

 What else might be true?

What am I not seeing right now?

Can I look at this through a different lens—perhaps gratitude, or grace, or patience?

This shift is not about spiritual bypassing or ignoring pain. It’s about expanding our view. It’s about allowing in a deeper truth—one rooted in love.

Perception is everything.

It’s the lens that colors your reality.

And you get to choose the lens.

Let your perception be shaped by intention.

Let your heart stay open.

And let love guide what you see.

Reflection Prompt:

Is there a situation in your life right now that’s calling for a new perspective?

What lens are you currently looking through, and what might shift if you chose a different one?

When we change the world changes.
