What are you holding onto that is no longer serving you?

What are you holding on to that is no longer serving you? I’m talking about resentments, blame, anger, hurt, and any of the other low vibrations that we bog ourselves down with. How much energy do you give to these things in your life? What could you accomplish if you spent more time creating the life you want than you spend lamenting over something that happened in the past?

When we hold on to resentments or any other unwanted emotion, we expect the other person to do what we need them to do to make amends so we can feel better. Doing this puts our happiness in others’ hands. Any time we give our power away,  it doesn’t feel good.

I’ve spent plenty of time in my life buried deep in resentment and blame. Staying there made the negative emotions grow. The more I played a story over and over in my mind the bigger the story became. I would become attached to the emotion that came up when I told the story. I wanted to feel justified. I wanted to be right. I was giving my power away. I thought that the more attention I gave to my stories the better I would feel. Have you been there? How did that work for you? Not so great here.

It’s taken me a while, a long while actually, to realize that it was up to me to change how things were going in my life. Meaning that I am responsible for how I feel. How I feel is a good indication of how my life is going. When I learned that I couldn’t control what others said or did and that I was responsible only for myself and how I reacted to them, my life changed. I no longer put my ability to feel good on things outside of me.

Releasing responsibility and giving up expectations of others frees us from being resentful and blaming them for our unhappiness.  We don’t have to get caught up in a story and hold onto it.

The next time you find yourself playing a story over and over in your head that is full of negative emotions, ask yourself if that’s how you want to spend your time. Ask yourself if it feels good to think about it. Ask yourself if thinking about it will change it. Then find something to think about that makes you feel good. Fill your life with what serves your highest and greatest good and let go of the rest.

When we change the world changes.
