Serving with a grateful heart

I have felt like there was something I was missing on this path of finding myself. A mentor I have talks a lot about service and I wasn’t feeling it. If I was writing this book for myself, how could I be of service? I wasn’t feeling the service part. In fact, the word service felt heavy and full of responsibility.

I decided to take some time to explore my thoughts and feelings. I got quiet and then journaled about my findings.

“I realize that from my earliest memories I wanted to help people. I felt that deeply in my heart, it was my purpose; it’s why I’m here. In fact, I felt it so deeply and wanted it so badly that my heart’s desire turned into people-pleasing and putting others’ needs before my own. I thought that was being of service. The thing is, that left me feeling depleted, used, and unworthy.”

Service, as I knew it then, didn’t feel good and I didn’t like it. I thought it meant putting others’ needs before my own needs.

As I processed through these feelings, I realized that many times, the things I was constantly doing for people I was doing for myself; meaning I wanted something in return, like praise or some sort of recognition. This was learned behavior and in no way a conscious act. No wonder being of service felt so daunting.

I understand now, on a deep, soul level that service feels good. It is what I am able to do for others and myself when I have an open heart. A heart not afraid of rejection or ridicule for what I have to offer.

Service is allowing myself to receive my gifts and share them as they overflow naturally with abundance and love.

Service is not about getting anything in return. Service is not about outcomes or perceptions. It is only about sharing.

Service now feels like an honor to me. I love sharing my journey and wisdom with others. That’s what happens when we get out of our head and into our heart.

When we change the world changes.
