Courage

While thinking about what to share this week ‘courage’ came to mind. I looked up the definition and it said: “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery”.  My definition would say: in spite of instead of without fear. We can have courage even when we are in fear. I believe most things that require courage come with fear. If you didn’t have fear you wouldn’t need courage to do or say what you wanted.

For some it takes courage to sky dive and for some it takes courage to get out of bed in the morning. We are all in very different places in our lives. Some of the most fearful times in my life were when I had the most courage. It sure didn’t feel like it at the time. The courage came through the fear. I had a choice to stay in the fear or dig deeper and find courage. I remember being so comfortable in my uncomfortableness that I forgot to look for courage to bring me out.

So where does courage come from and how do we get it?

I believe courage comes from trust. Trusting that everything happens for a reason exactly the way it’s meant to and trusting that I can handle whatever happens. Courage is a choice. We can choose courage over fear. Many times I waited to make changes in my life or say something until I didn’t feel like I had a choice. It was easier to be stuck than change the things I needed to change in my life. Looking back I didn’t think about courage. It was always there I just had to choose it. Even though courage looks different to all of us  we all have it.

The more conscious we are the more places we can choose courage in our lives. The more we choose courage the stronger we become and the more we trust. What are some things that require courage for you right now?  Here are a few of mine.

  • Saying things I need to say even though others may not agree with my point of view.
  • Being quiet when I want to give advice to someone that isn’t asking for it.
  • Setting boundaries and sticking to them.
  • To make self care my priority.

Today I choose to be present. When I feel fear I will remember to seek courage instead of staying stuck in it. Choosing courage consistently leads to living a courageous life and that’s what I desire. What about you?

When we change the world changes.
